Honeycomb Blinds

Honeycomb Blinds are a popular choice nowadays with their many benefits such as insulation and noise reduction. They are also easy to clean, all you need to do is use the dusting attachment of your vacuum cleaner. Dust from top to bottom then you are done. One problem that can occur with honeycomb blinds is finding dead bugs, dirt and dust inside the honeycomb openings. Roman Blinds

To dust and remove dirt from your blinds use the dust-brush on your vacuum cleaner. Make sure your blinds are fully open and use the dust-brush in a downward motion cleaning from the top to the bottom of the blind until the entire blind is clean. Pay special attention to the side and bottom edges of the blind, as they are more likely to be dusty as they frequently come into contact with the windowsill.  If you find a stain on your roman blinds try wiping a clean damp cloth over it until it disappears. If the stain remains there you could try using a little detergent on the stain or a specialist fabric stain remover but check it can be used on roman blinds.  Spot test the stain remover first in a discreet area and ensure you follow the manufacturer's instructions.  Dry clean your blinds if the entire blind is dirty and needs to be freshened up as it is the best way to make sure your blind is not damaged in the cleaning process unlike some home cleaning procedures. Venetian Blinds

Venetian Blinds come in a range of materials including PVC, wood and aluminium and it depends on the material as to how they must be cleaned.

PVC (Timber Look) Blinds

PVC Venetian Blinds are very easy to clean, as they are a plastic wood look-a-like, which is one of their main advantages. They don’t warp or crack like wood so are great in humid areas of the house such as bathrooms and kitchens. To clean PVC blinds, use a solution of a little detergent in a bucket of water. Dip a cloth in the bucket and use it to wipe over the blinds. Start from the top slat of the blinds and finish with the bottom slat. Then go over each slat with a clean wet cloth so the detergent doesn’t leave marks. Next use a dry cloth to fully dry the blinds. For any tricky areas use a toothbrush dipped in the detergent solution.

Timber Blinds

When cleaning wood you have to be very careful as leaving water on them for too long can cause them to warp or crack so never clean your wood blinds with water and detergent. Vacuum your Timber Blinds with the brush attachment to rid them of dust or dirt. For a deeper clean use wood polish on a wiping cloth. Use a toothbrush dipped in wood polish to reach tricky areas.

Aluminium Blinds

Aluminium is another very easy to clean material, which is one of its advantages as well as being a very durable material. To dust Aluminium Blinds use your dust brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner or a lambswool duster. To clean your aluminium blinds use a solution of water and detergent on a sponge to clean over the slats. Then either wipe them dry with a cloth or let them air dry.

Extra Tips
    • Do not use harsh specialised cleaning solutions on your blinds as the chemicals could damage or stain your blinds.

    • Vacuum and dust your blinds weekly to make your cleaning results last, so you only have to clean your blinds a couple of times a year.

    • To stop harsh window cleaners damaging your blinds, always spray window cleaner into a cloth and then use the cloth to clean the windows rather than directly spraying window cleaner on to the windows and potentially hitting your blinds.

    • Use a peg to mark the slat you are currently cleaning if you are often interrupted while cleaning so you don’t waste time cleaning slats you have already done once you come back.

    • When using a ladder or stepladder to clean high blinds ensure it is on a stable surface to stop it from wobbling or ask someone to hold the ladder while you are cleaning.

    • Make this DIY cleaning tool to help you clean your blinds quicker: Wrap two microfiber cloths around the ends of a pair of tongs and use rubber bands to secure them. Insert the tool between two slats and wipe across the slat.

After reading Veneta’s great how to clean window blinds manual, you should be all set to start cleaning your own blinds. Maintenance and proper cleaning of blinds is the secret to making them last and keeping them looking fresh and new for a long time.
